Definition of a Lamp Shade  
Also known as 'Light Shade' or simply 'Shade,' a Lamp Shade is a cover for a Table Lamp , Floor light or Wall Light. Lamp Shades help to redirect and soften the light produced from a light bulb, whilst complementing a room's decor. Lampshades come in many sizes, shapes, ie, Drum, Coolie, etc, and fabrics, such as Silk and Cotton.  Glass Lamp Shades are also available, from the Tiffany Glass Lighting range.

What is a Drum Lamp Shade?
A Drum Lamp Shade has a wide top and bottom, with virtually straight sides.  View examples of Drum Lamp Shades.

Lamp Shades are available in a number of sizes, commonly 5 inch, 6 inch, 8 inch, 10 inch, 12 inch, 14 inch, 16 inch and 20 inch.  Limited designs are available in 7 inch, 11 inch and 18 inch sizes.

Can I buy 18" Lamp Shades?
Unfortunately 18" Lamp Shades are now mostly discontinued, but with 16" and 20" Shades available, in a variety of colours and shapes, we trust that you will be able to find a Shade to suit your needs.

Do you have a size chart that shows Imperial (Inches) versus Metric (Millimetres) measurements?
To help you select the correct size Lamp Shade, Imperial to Metric conversions are:-

5 inch   = 127 mm
 6 inch   = 153 mm
7 inch   = 178 mm
8 inch   = 204 mm
10 inch = 254 mm
11 inch = 279 mm
12 inch = 305 mm
14 inch = 356 mm
16 inch = 407 mm
18 inch = 457 mm
20 inch = 508 mm

How do I measure a Lamp Shade?
A Lampshade's size is determined by measuring the diameter of the widest part at the bottom of the Lampshade.   Please view our Customer Information Video for a demonstration.

Some Lampshades can cope with higher wattages than others.  Manufacturers always specifiy a maximum wattage, which depends on the size of the Lamp Shade, the Lamp Shade Fabric, and how close the light bulb sits to the Shade edges.  So to clarify, specifications for our Lampshades are as follows:-
  • 8 and 10 inch Lamp Shades can handle a maximum of 60w
  • 12 inch, 14 inch, 16 inch and 20 inch Shades can all manage a maximum of 100w
A Shade Carrier is a free standing support for large Lamp Shades.  So, rather than the Lamp Shade connecting directly to the light bulb or light fitting, the Shade Carrier is used instead, to support the weight of the Lamp Shade.  Shade Carriers are included within the price of a Lamp Shade, here at The Internet Electrical Store.  We will be making a Customer Information Video to demonstrate the use of Shade Carriers very soon.
